Flash Fiction #31

A couple of weeks ago, I was sitting near a fountain at a mall and this inspired an idea for some fictional writing. Hope you enjoy =) ~~~ "Mommy, can I make a wish?" The middle child, Lisa, had tugged on her mom's sleeve while pointing to the upcoming fountain in a shopping mall. "Sure thing, dear," she replied before taking out her purse to get to her coin pouch. Charles, the youngest of the three siblings, left his mom and other siblings behind, and ran to the edge of the fountain to get a closer look at it. This caused the oldest child, Olivia, to run after her little brother as their mom was preoccupied for that brief second. "Thank you, Mommy!" Lisa received not one, but two coins and she made a huge grin as she skipped towards the fountain. Their mom sat nearby on one of the ledges looking at the fountain while keeping a good watch on her children. As soon as Charles saw her older sister with her two coins, he ran to his mom and plea

Lunch with a Friend

"Huh?" I said out loud dumbfounded at the realization that the restaurant was on the other side of the street from me currently. I presumed when looking up the address that it was on the east side of the street, not the west side. Oh, how wrong I was on that assumption. I heaved a sigh as I looked left and right before jogging across to the door of the restaurant in a hurry. Two minutes earlier as I was walking to the restaurant, I sent a text message which said, "I'm on my way. Be there soon." Merely seconds after I had sent it, I received a response. "Don't worry, I just arrived." After reading what she had wrote, I took a breath with a small smile. Today was a day that I was looking forward to in a long time. I had planned a day to have lunch with a good friend that I haven't seen in a long time because I came back home after my contract finished from a faraway town, and she was busy with work. The fear of asking to set up a lunch get

Alternative Ending to "A Love Too Late"

Image
I'm satisfied with how A Love Too Late ended, and the overall story in general but when I was deciding whether to go for a happy ending or not for Jackie, I was stuck for a while. Then I wrote the current ending and thought it was fine the way it was. Looking at it from another perspective, it is a happy ending (for Joyce). It was also a little bit therapeutic since some of my experiences was used as inspiration for the story. It was some sort of a closure. Then a friend told me, "why not write an alternative ending", and I thought "why not?" Then I decided to write it on my blog to see whether what other people would think of it and compared to the canon ending. =) Hope you enjoy. In case you didn't know, this is under the assumption that you read the original short story and so spoilers are expected. ~~~ ### (Copy and pasted the last paragraph of one of the section to place it in the correct timeline) We bickered amongst each other as we got to th

Flash Fiction #30

Image
Hi, I haven't gotten any new inspiration or interesting ideas in a while to write in the flash fiction genre so I apologize for that. I came across a picture on Google+ on one of the communities (Writers' Corner) as a writing prompt to get the writing juices going. I'm going to give it a try to get me out of this rut. I have been working on my short stories and longer WIPs, so I haven't been slacking on writing in general... Hope you enjoy =) ~~~ "Are you sure we took the correct turn earlier at the fork a while ago?" Jesse asked as he glanced at the foggy sky and unfamiliar surroundings. He checked his smartphone if he had any signal, and to no avail, it was zero bars. After a moment of silence, Jesse put his hand on his friend's shoulder to stop him. "Hold up. Why are you being so quiet?" Alex took his eyes off of his hand drawn map to look up at Jesse. He replied, "yeah, everything is fine. I know where we are going."

Flash Fiction #29

I had this idea from something that happened which probably isn't related to what really happened... But anyway, this short short story is an inspiration from this randomly occurred event. Hope you enjoy! =) ~~~ 4:30 PM. Just thirty more minutes until the end of another work day, and I get to go home to relax for the evening. No troubles today fortunately. When a minute passed by, a co-worker, Glenn, noticed something that was in the corner of the office. He said as he stood up to walk over to the corner, "You guys have to take a look at this!" David stopped typing at his work computer, and turned around in his office chair at Glenn. "What is it?" "It's so cool and amazing, yet interesting at the same time." Glenn continued on still being mysterious. Then Nick turned around at his desk, and both him and David made their way to Glenn with raised eyebrows. "This better be good," Nick said as they were walking over there. When

Mini-Series - Part 8

Sneakily, and quietly, Jason popped his head between the two of us, both of his arms were around the both of us. “Boo! How's the dish washing going?” Yikes! I literally jumped up a bit at the unexpected scare. From the corner of my eyes, I saw Lily lose her composure for a second too. “Whoa! Did that really scare the both of you?” Jason looked at the two of us with wide eyes. “Geez, leave us alone. Stop baiting us after finishing your chore.” Lily glared at him. “I was going to tell Ken to meet me in the backyard afterward. Sounds cool?” He looked at me after glancing at Lily initially. “Sure,” I said, nodding. After Jason left us alone, Lily chuckled quietly. “What's so funny?” I asked, confused. “You and Jason are total opposites from one another, however you two are best friends.” “I know, right? Unbelievable. But I trust him the most.” “That's good.” Then Lily paused for a second. He never tells me anything, but I always wonder how you tw

Flash Fiction #28

I had a dream just now... It was kind of scary in a way depending on how you view it. Hope you enjoy =). Also as a note, I did not abandon my mini-series writing project about Ken and Lily. It's just thinking of ideas and where to go and how to keep it interesting... Sorry about that... It's not so frequent as I had hope, but quality over quantity is what I think is important. And also thinking on other stuff too. ~~~ I'm tired. Sigh. I leaned back in my chair, rubbing my face with my hands after trying to pull out my hair. All over my desk had random pieces of paper everywhere with scribbles, food, empty pop cans, and opened books to pages I hope to read. I glanced at my clock on the bedside cabinet. 3:00 AM. Another late night. A hot bath may clear my mind and rejuvenate my body to keep on going just a little longer. When the bath was filled with warm water, I threw my clothes in a hurry to the washroom floor and slid in with my eyes closed. At first touch it

Update : October 30, 2014. I'm sharing this post on Julie Valerie's Book Blog as part of the Hump Day Blog Hop. Join in on the fun and click on the link or the one at the end of this post. HUMP DAY BLOG HOP “On Hump Day About Books” RUNS FOR ONE WEEK WEDNESDAY (Oct 29, 2014) to WEDNESDAY (Nov 5, 2014) ~~~ I just thought of this idea randomly just now. I swear that this was influenced by something long ago, but I can't remember where the inspiration came from. Nevertheless, hope you enjoy =) ~~~ "Jess, what should we put here?" My eight year old sister, Agnes had asked and pointed at the laptop screen. I was controlling the mouse on the screen, and we were setting up a profile on a dating site. I clicked in the box labelled "Hobbies", and was ready to type on the keyboard. "I don't know. We can't possibly put our dad's normal hobbies. They're too boring." "I agree!" Agnes chimed in loudly. "C

Mini-Series - Part 7

Sorry for the delay, I realized that writing it on the spot is become harder and the key thing with writing it in multiple parts with no central document to hold all of the chapters is consistency. I've gathered all of the chapters that I have written so far in a Word document so that I can read past chapters and have nothing come out of hand and to foreshadow more. To help keep me sane. Even though this is practice, I still want to tell a good interesting story (or at least I hope it is interesting). I'm also sorry that it isn't as daily as it is, maybe when I get better with practice, I can churn out the ideas more often. Hope you enjoy the latest part... and hope you await for future chapters to come for more of the story to unfold between Ken and Lily. ~~~ From the corner of my eyes, I saw Lily stopped washing the dishes, and heard her whisper, “Me too.” “What do you mean?” I looked over at her, eyebrows raised. “Isn't it obvious?” As both my heart and mind w

Mini-Series - Part 6

The night continued on with the full moon out, as the sun peeked up from the horizon, it had signaled the beginning of the new morning. I saw Lily had walked downstairs into the kitchen in her pajamas, still sleepy, then her eyes opened up right away as soon as she saw me, like a deer facing headlights. She sat the furthest away from me at the table, avoiding eye contact and focusing on the food. Breakfast began with everyone, including their parents. This reminded me of when Jason and I were younger when I would sleep over at his house many years ago. Those were good times. With a stroke of coincidence, Lily and I were delegated to the task of dish washing. After minutes of silence, I said, grinning, "Last night really happened?" She nodded, her cheeks reddening due to embarrassment. "I wanted to see you happy even if it is only a bit." "Thanks for being supportive, but it is a bit weird. You're like a sister to me."

Mini-Series - Part 5

I shifted myself subtly on the couch, but enough for Lily to notice. She backed away quickly,  her cheeks flushed, especially after seeing me awake. "I'm really sorry," she said, panicked and embarrassed. "I should head to bed now." "What was all of that just now?" I asked after sitting up. "I really regret it right now,  but I was so close to you, watching, that it...  just happened." "It's okay, although a little odd since you're like a sister to me," I replied, "but if your brother hears about this, he's going to kill me." She was initially crestfallen, but soon after giggled, putting her hand up to her mouth. "That's true. It's our little secret. Good night, Ken. I hope you feel better soon." When I was alone, after it had been all done and said, when I found out that it was only Lily, I was disappointed it was only her. My he

Mini-Series - Part 4

The next time I regained consciousness, I was lost for a moment in both time and space, until I realized I was still on the couch given the fact that a soft cushion was under me. Did I just fall asleep on the couch unnoticed? It was a stressful week from work aside from the drama with Emily, maybe Jason left me alone to get some rest. In the midst of my thoughts, I realized just now that my lips was connected to another. My first thought was Emily. Then I sniffed the surrounding area, the sweet floral scent of peach apricot floating in the air. Was this a dream? I could hear my heart beat pulsing quickly all over my body, each of my muscles were tightening from their relaxed state, then I finally opened my eyes to witness an unlikely scenario. Although I was so close that I could only see her closed eyes, her nose, and a few strands of black hair falling forwards over her face, I knew who it was. Lily.

Mini-Series - Part 3

Lily. I never actually noticed how much she had grown. She turned out to be really cute in her navy blue dot print blazer, dark blue jeans, white blouse, and the fact that she was still single too. But I'm not surprised, given that Jason is overprotective of her. "Ken, what are you thinking?" Jason raised his left eyebrow, puzzled. "You've been staring off into the distance." I sighed. "It's nothing. Tired. Do you mind if I stay the night here? Some of Emily's stuff is still at my place, and it's so suffocating being alone there." "Sure thing, anything for a friend." "I'm grateful of your support through these times." I slapped my hand against his back, appreciative of his response. Then I couldn't remember anything else afterward, but darkness had enveloped me.

Mini-Series - Part 2

"It's Ken! I can't believe it's been a while!" A female voice yelled from across the room, and it got louder by each second until she was right beside my ears. I didn't bother to look up from within my arms. Judging from her voice, I knew who she was. Black, shoulder-length hair. Usually tied up into two ponytails. Round-shaped glasses. Braces. Chubby cheeks, but she has lost some weight from what I last remember. "Lily, can you please be quiet?" Jason scolded her. "Why? What's up?" She sounded worried and sincere. "Not now. Later." Jason flicked her away in a hurry, annoyed. Lily glared at her older brother. "Fine, but you better tell me later!" When Lily left the room, Jason sighed, "Sorry about that. Girls these days..." "It's okay, I quite like how she can always be positive. It makes me wish I had that right now." I finally looked up at Lily getting someth

Mini-Series - Part 1

As the title says, this is a mini project series that I'm going to do as a test run. It is related to a writing project (Tentative Title: Yamagata Detective Agency) in terms of format that I've been planning and thinking about for quite a bit. I'm not sure how long this mini-series will go on as I haven't even thought that far aside from the first few parts... but well let's see how it goes! Hope you enjoy this first part! =) ~~~ I heaved myself onto a chair, and slammed my face against the table in front of me with a sigh afterwards. Jason asked, "Are you still sad after the break-up with Emily?" "Do you even need to ask the obvious?" I looked at him after rolling my eyes. "There's so many fish in the sea that are better than her." Jason stretched out his hands dramatically. "Don't let her bring you down." I turned to face him with a stone look. "Can you get even cheesier than that?" &

Planning Stages

I've been thinking of a story series idea for the past week. It's a format that I'm not used to (even after reading what other people did in the same genre), so I just thought of this test run idea of a mini series on this blog. I'm not sure how long it will be since I just thought of it aside from thinking of the first few parts. That's why it's only a mini series. It is not related to the writing project though. Not even related to the same genre. I don't want to say anything too much without concrete information in case I want to take it back later on. The project is still in the planning stages. I did think of the characters (that I will talk about a bit later in this post), the setting, the opening arc, etc. I'll say what I feel comfortable with. I hope to have the project ready to with the first chapter sometime later this year... (I really hope not at the end of the year). The idea originated from a collaboration that I was going to do wit

Flash Fiction #26

I'll have more information in the coming days, but I'm going to be doing a test run of a mini-series for a particular format that I'm thinking of doing for my next writing project. Hope you look forward to it, and hope you enjoy this particular story~ ^_^ ~~~ "Wow, this is the first time playing basketball after 5 years or so," I said after a friend passed the ball to me, and caught it. "I'm going to be so bad." "Don't worry so much. We're all not that good, so let's all just enjoy and have fun." "If you say so, but I don't want to embarrass myself," I muttered so that no one else could hear me. I set up my shot and stared at the basketball hoop to aim where I was going to shoot. Then I bent my knees, relaxed my muscles and took a deep breath to calm the nerves. The left hand is only for support. Just jump, flick my wrist, and shoot. I watched as the basketball left my right hand and soared through th

Flash Fiction #25

I've been thinking about my other projects (ie. my WIPs, my new project) the past couple of days (not including work), so I've been neglecting this blog. Sorry about that. I just thought of a new idea at this very moment... Hope you enjoy =) ~~~ Huff huff. I have to get away as fast as possible. In the middle of winter up north, goosebumps were everywhere on me due to the chilly wind and snow. I cursed under my breath, "It's a fricking blizzard!" I was in a hurry so I didn't take any jacket, and as I was running; I was clutching my stomach in pain. I glanced down to look at my bloody hand trying to apply pressure on my wound on the side of my lower torso. Even though it was so cold, my hand was so warm for a brief second each time a couple drops of blood left my body. Earlier in the day, I was kidnapped and tied up here in the middle of nowhere. I barely escaped after finding the perfect time, injuring one but they shot me as I scrambled away. I g

Flash Fiction #24

Sorry for the random idea for this flash fiction story. I felt like writing this out, and I'm not sure where this will go. Let's see... Hope you enjoy =) ~~~ "That design looks cool," I said as I was browsing through a kiosk at a mall. A friend who was working at the same kiosk leaned over to take a closer look. "That looks nice. It's a very cool and simple design. Do you want to wear it to see if it feels comfortable?" "Sure." I nodded and watched her get the keys to unlock the door of the glass display to get the ring. After placing it on the palm of my left hand, she said, "I'll go check the price of it." "Thanks." I held it carefully with two fingers and turned it over, noticing just how small and light was the ring. The inside of the ring had an engraving saying it was stainless steel, and matched my stainless steel watch. I tried putting it on and it slid so easily through my fingers. I chuckled silen

Inspiration

Hi all! Today I would like to talk about an inspiration for quite a lot of my recent ideas, short stories, and WIPs. I think I've known this group since around 2007. They are Wong Fu Productions! Yay! My first video that I watch of them would have to be "Just a Nice Guy" back in 2007. The main members and co-founders of Wong Fu Productions are Phillip Wang, Wesley Chan, and Ted Fu. They make such interesting, non-cliche, moving and emotional stories. It's very real, and has that simplistic feel. Some of them are minimalist and they don't have dialogue, which requires the viewer to use their imagination but the story doesn't suffer. I'm not really sure how to explain it, but the music and directing really helps bring out stories that touch most of the fans. A lot of their short films are romance-based, and I have to say that a lot of my ideas/emotional impact stemmed from that. They do light comedy sketches here and there in between the serious drama st

Flash Fiction #23

This flash fiction story was inspired by my first cottage trip the past week. This is dedicated to the group of friends that I cherish and think deeply about every single day. (P.S. You know who you are ^^). Hope you enjoy this really short idea (out of possibly many more)! ~~~ The past weeks leading up to this day have been a long wait. I sat in the back seat of one of my friend's car, looking outside at the passing scenery at the side of the highway. My legs and hands would always tremble from nervousness, but this time was different. The shakes came from excitement and pure joy. "We're almost there. Are you excited?" A friend turned around to ask me, smiling. I looked at her, trying to show my biggest smile yet. "Of course! I've been looking forward to this day since the idea first started months ago." Then the car made a turn into the forest of trees, and went both up and down the dirt path before slowing down to a halt at the front of th

I have a little update to say on upcoming projects. I have 3 short stories that are in revision at the moment, and probably the closest in being released soon compared to my longer WIPs. Aside from the editing and probably outside help on proofreaders from friends when I ask, I need to come up with actual cover designs. Thankfully I have some ideas but need to somehow take pictures of them. Even though it sounds like there isn't much work left, it is still a lot of work. Another update is that a friend told me about cell phone novels. Technically speaking, she told me like 4 years ago or something but I was re-acquainted recently with cell phone novels by the same person (which she has no memory of telling me before). I do have a main idea for that sort of genre, but am going to need to plan it out a bit more... plus have to get together a cover design in the mean time which I do have some ideas... I also have to read some examples about cell phone novels to get a feel for them..

While listening to some music, I took another look at a short idea that I had shelved earlier. Hope it makes sense and you enjoy it. :) There's a project that I'm thinking of starting soon. It's still in the planning stages, so I don't want to say anything until I have a clearer focus on what's the story, character, setting, style, etc. I just wanted to say something... ~~~ After one year went by, I finally got myself up bit by bit. Beforehand, each day was a chore to get up in the morning to come to school. I never told anyone what I thought,  not even to my parents to avoid their worries. Every time I came to school, I would avoid all of my classmates' eyes and tried my best to blend into the background. I always thought to want to live a solitary life after what happened one year ago. Things changed four years later. I met a friend and through her, I got to meet many more people to fill in the loneliness. Time made me forget the sadness and

Flash Fiction #20

Sorry for the lack of updates this week. Work has been busy. Too tired to think after work. Brainstorming ideas is different though. They just come naturally. It's the weekend now! Yay! For this flash fiction, I had a somewhat sad idea in draft but I thought of a more happier idea just now. I hope it makes sense. The sad idea will come later. Hope you enjoy! ~~~ Just a couple of minutes ago would be one of my happiest memories I would treasure until the day I die. I was waiting in a long line to meet my idol. Even though I came an hour early, there was so many people waiting before I arrived. It made me think that she had really captured our mind and heart. She was simply perfect. Her straight flowing black hair going below her shoulders looked like there was no split ends, or any strands of hair out of place. She looked at each fan with her bright and shining brown eyes. Even in front of her fans, or with other people she would keep being understanding and cute no matter how wha

Writing on a tablet still feels odd for me, at least for writing stories. I'm still more comfortable typing on a physical keyboard. But I can't use that excuse to not update the blog for 3 weeks, however my writing for my WIPs are on hold since I don't have my computer. I did think of a partial idea yesterday for a flash fiction story. Hope you enjoy! :) ~~~ "Aurora, is that you?" I asked, surprised to see her walking passed me just a moment ago. She turned around, and smiled after taking a couple of seconds of looking at me. We met each other half way, and she greeted, "I wasn't expecting to see you here, Jackie. Out on a date?" I took my hands out from my pockets to scratch at my chin. "Not really. My mom wanted to do some shopping, so I figured I wanted to accompany her just to walk around. I've been inside my room all day. What about you?" She laughed, and I remembered the good old days being with her. "I'm just l

As I said in the previous post, I'm writing on a tablet. This is a first. I'm really not sure how it will look like, and I'm not used to typing on a tablet compared to a desktop. Forgive me on that. I thought of this idea when I looked at a painting. :) Hope you enjoy! ~~~ Today seems like a nice day. The bright sun shining overhead in the clear sky. I'm particularly jealous on the weightlessness of birds flapping their wings through the wind. It seems so fun for them to fly and feel the air surround them. All I can do is to be stuck on the ground, and just hopping to get to places. If I could be reborn, I wanted to be a bird than a frog. I keep these secret thoughts to myself because all of my family and friends think I'm crazy to want to fly. They always tell me that we have an advantage over birds, and that is we can swim. I wasn't convinced until that fateful day. I had crept up to a lone robin perched on a low branch, possibly looking for something to e

"Every Saturday my favorite thing to do is..." For this flash fiction story, I used a writing prompt generator to get this initial idea... Let's see what I come up with. Hope you enjoy =) As a small update, I'm going to be starting a full-time job from June to October. I'm not sure how much it will affect the scheduling of working on my WIPs, or even updating this blog. I'll try to keep it up to date when I can! I'll be away from my computer for the next 3 weeks, though I'll be taking the family tablet with me... but it's going to be strange typing on it. I feel that it'll be slow plucking away the letters... ~~~ As I turned to my right to look at my alarm clock sitting on my bedside cabinet, the time read 8:30 AM. For a brief second after I had awoke from my slumber, I thought it was a weekday and would have been late for school. Then it occurred to me that it was Saturday after taking a closer look on my calendar pasted to the wall b

As you may have guessed, this was one of a group of ideas that I had imagined on my cruise vacation. During the trip, I just quickly wrote down the main idea and did not expand upon it until now. I hope that I captured the original idea that I had... But hope you enjoy it regardless =) ~~~ On the second day of the trip, it was pure bliss enjoying the hot sun by the beach lying on a chair with the cool breeze coming from the ocean. There was no need to worry about work, or any stressful situation. It was like a reset button, and a time to recharge. Moments earlier, I made sure to put on enough sun screen to avoid looking like a red pepper. After my brief nap, a cousin sat down beside me. "You should join us in the water. It feels cool, and fantastic." "In a bit." I looked up at her, and watched her go back to the water. After a couple of minutes, I decided to stand up and make my way down to the beach. As soon as my feet touched the water, it was freezing cold.

I sighed as I glanced at the time on the bottom right corner of the computer screen. Another late night at work. I closed another binder filled with paperwork, and set it aside on the furthest corner of my cubicle. I looked at the last binder in front of me out of the many binders around my desk and on the floor. I placed my glasses on th e table, and rubbed my exhausted eyes. I took out my cell phone and looked at my text message sent at 6 PM to my long-term girlfriend. "I'm sorry, Stella. Too busy at work. I'll be late for dinner. You don't have to wait up for me." She responded back then with this. "It's okay, I unde
